Dragon Quest XII reste en cours de développement, avec des informations à révéler progressivement, selon le créateur de la série Yuji Horii.

Lors d'un récent livestream avec son groupe d'émissions de radio, Kosokoso Hōsō Kyoku, Horii a confirmé que l'équipe de développement de Square Enix travaille avec diligence sur Dragon Quest XII. Cela marque la première mise à jour depuis mai 2024, après le passage des personnages clés Akira Toriyama et Koichi Sugiyama. Le départ du producteur principal Yu Miyake pour diriger la division des jeux mobiles de Square Enix avait également précédé cette mise à jour.

La restructuration antérieure à Square Enix et l'absence de mises à jour avaient alimenté les préoccupations des fans concernant l'annulation du jeu. Cependant, la déclaration d'Horii confirme effectivement que Dragon Quest XII progresse.

Le seul visuel actuellement disponible pour Dragon Quest XII est ce logo, dévoilé en 2021.

Dragon Quest XII a été annoncé dans le cadre de la célébration du 35e anniversaire de la franchise. Ce sera le premier épisode de la série principale depuis Dragon Quest XI: Echoes d'un âge insaisissable. Square Enix a depuis signalé que le remake Dragon Quest III HD-2D a dépassé les projections de vente, réalisant 2 millions d'exemplaires vendus.
