Virtua Fighter Returns: Exclusive Engine Gameplay Preview
Virtua Fighter Returns: A Glimpse at Sega's Next-Gen Fighter
Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter installment, marking the franchise's return after nearly two decades of relative dormancy. The footage, showcased at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, offers a tantalizing preview of the game's visual style and combat mechanics.
The last significant Virtua Fighter release was Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, a 2021 remaster (coming to Steam in January 2025). This new entry promises a complete departure, however. While the recently released footage isn't actual gameplay, the in-engine graphics provide a strong indication of the game's visual direction.
The video showcases a shift away from the franchise's classic polygonal style towards a more realistic aesthetic, blending elements reminiscent of Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The iconic character Akira is featured, sporting updated attire that departs from his traditional look. The flawlessly choreographed combat sequences hint at a focus on polished, visually striking action.
Development and Future Outlook
Development is being spearheaded by Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, also responsible for the Yakuza series and the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster. This collaboration, alongside the studio's work on Project Century, suggests a significant commitment to the Virtua Fighter franchise's revival.
While details remain scarce, project director Riichirou Yamada's previous statements and Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi's enthusiastic declaration – "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" – indicate a strong push to revitalize this legendary fighting game. The 2020s are shaping up to be a significant era for fighting games, and the return of Virtua Fighter is poised to solidify this trend.
