Straight to Full Release Without Subscriptions

Funcom has confirmed Dune: Awakening will debut as a complete product on May 20 rather than entering early access. In a March 21 Steam blog post, the developer shared details about the game's business model, technical requirements, and future content roadmap.

This multiplayer survival adaptation of Frank Herbert's seminal 1965 sci-fi novel breaks from traditional MMO conventions by avoiding mandatory subscriptions - unlike genre staples like Final Fantasy XIV and World of Warcraft. Instead, the studio promises "ongoing expansions through free updates introducing new content and gameplay improvements."

Citing their extensive live-service expertise, Funcom emphasized long-term support plans. The developer currently maintains Anarchy Online (approaching its 25th anniversary) and continues delivering free updates/DLC for Conan Exiles years post-launch.

Pre-Order Options and Edition Breakdown

The Steam post also revealed upcoming optional paid DLCs and imminent pre-orders. By March 24, the official website outlined three purchase options (Standard, Deluxe, Ultimate) and opened pre-order availability.

All pre-order customers receive two exclusive in-game items: the Terrarium of Muad'Dib decorative piece and Sunset Dye Global Swatch color customization option.

Deluxe and Ultimate edition buyers gain five-day early access starting May 15. The Deluxe package includes:

• Season Pass covering 4 DLCs (first featuring Arrakis wildlife decor including iconic Sandworms)
• Sardaukar Bator Armor cosmetic set
• Base game access

The Ultimate edition adds these premium extras:

• Exclusive vehicle skins (Dusk Rider Sandbike/Blue Dasher Ornithopter)
• Caladan Palace architectural set
• Film-accurate 2021 Stillsuit outfit
• 50-page digital artbook
• 90-minute OST
