Gunn: Key to DCU Phase 1 and TV Recaps

Author : Thomas Update : Nov 10,2025

The DC Cinematic Universe's Phase 1, led by James Gunn, is officially here, kicking off with his upcoming Superman movie. According to the filmmaker and studio head, this project is absolutely essential for setting up the overarching narrative of the "Gods and Monsters" phase.

"It's very important," Gunn told Entertainment Weekly in a June 19 interview. "While I wouldn't say the animated series Creature Commandos is crucial, both Peacemaker and Superman play significant roles in building the larger story."

However, Gunn emphasized the importance of balance—providing key information and moments for dedicated fans without alienating more casual viewers. After all, engaging new audiences could turn them into long-term fans.

"At the same time, I'm being careful to ensure that anyone can jump in and follow the main story without feeling lost. The other projects add depth and context to what you're watching," Gunn explained. "This approach might evolve as the universe expands. It could eventually resemble Infinity War and Endgame, where watching one is necessary to fully understand the other."

He continued, "For now, I'm ensuring you don't need to see Superman to enjoy Supergirl, for example. While Superman includes elements that lead into Peacemaker, it's not a prerequisite. It enhances the experience, but we also include a 'Previously in the DCU' recap before each episode to make the TV shows more accessible."

Gunn's Superman arrives in theaters on July 8, followed by Peacemaker Season 2 on Max on August 21.
