Karl Urban Cast as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2
The next Mortal Kombat film is on the horizon, and we've just gotten our first glimpse of one of the movie's new characters: Johnny Cage.
Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon revealed a poster featuring Karl Urban (known for The Boys and Judge Dredd) in the role of Johnny Cage, the Hollywood star turned Mortal Kombat fighter. The poster mimics a fictional Johnny Cage movie poster, showcasing two motorcycles dramatically leaping through flames.
Mortal Kombat 2 continues the story from the 2021 reboot, which starred Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Hiroyuki Sanada (from Shogun) as Scorpion, and Joe Taslim (The Raid) as Sub-Zero. Urban joins an expanded cast that includes Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi.

The initial film revolved around Cole Young's introduction to the world of Mortal Kombat and the brutal history between Scorpion and Sub-Zero. While specific plot details for the sequel remain under wraps, the rich lore of the Mortal Kombat video game series offers numerous story possibilities.
Originally set for a theatrical release, the first movie's launch was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and ultimately debuted on HBO Max. The sequel, however, is scheduled for a full theatrical release on October 24, 2025.
Our review rated Mortal Kombat a 7, describing it as "a spectacular showcase of blood, gore, and visually stunning martial arts combat."
