Mario Kart's Free Roam: An Open World Adventure with Friends
During today's Mario Kart World Direct, we received exciting new information about the game's innovative Free Roam mode, including insights into its multiplayer capabilities and the activities players can engage in while exploring Mario Kart World's expansive world.
Although we had the opportunity to go hands-on with Mario Kart World last week, it wasn't until today that we got a comprehensive look at Free Roam mode and its features. Free Roam introduces a groundbreaking feature to Mario Kart World, allowing players to freely navigate the game's vast, Forza Horizon-inspired world map. Unlike previous Mario Kart titles, where race tracks are isolated and only accessible during races, Mario Kart World integrates these tracks into an open world. This means players can drive from one track to another in specific game modes and explore the areas in between. In Free Roam mode, when you're not racing, you can embark on mini-adventures throughout the world. The environment is filled with various hidden collectibles such as coins and ? panels, though the specific benefits of collecting these items remain undisclosed. Players can also discover P-Switches scattered across the landscape, which, when activated, trigger short challenges like collecting blue coins.
Furthermore, Free Roam mode offers the ability to enter Photo Mode at any time, enabling players to capture images of their racers in diverse poses and from different angles. Importantly, Free Roam is not limited to solo play. You and your friends can explore together, take photos, tackle challenges, or simply enjoy each other's company. Free Roam supports up to four players on the same system through split-screen mode, and up to eight players via local wireless play, with two players per system.
Today's Mario Kart World Direct also revealed additional details about the game, including new characters, courses, and modes. You can find a comprehensive overview of all the announcements here.
