Marvel Star Simu Liu Says He's Working to Get Sleeping Dogs a Film Adaptation

Author : Harper Update : Feb 18,2025

Simu Liu, the Marvel star, is spearheading efforts to resurrect the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu's response to a fan on X/Twitter, confirming his pursuit of securing the rights to bring the 2012 video game to the big screen. He stated, "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen."

The project, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, vanished a year later. Yen recently confirmed its cancellation, citing years of invested time, effort, and personal funds, ultimately thwarted by the unpredictable nature of Hollywood. His statement included, "I waited for years...And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?"

Liu's intervention, however, reignites hope for the Hong Kong-set action franchise. The success of his involvement in securing the rights or propelling the film forward remains uncertain.

The original Sleeping Dogs game, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows Detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates a Hong Kong Triad gang. Critically acclaimed (earning an 8/10 from IGN), the game, despite its popularity, never received sequels.
