Minecraft 2 “Basically Announced” By Original Creator
Minecraft Creator Hints at Minecraft 2: A Spiritual Successor?
Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has ignited excitement among fans by hinting at the possibility of a Minecraft 2. While not a direct sequel due to IP rights held by Microsoft, Notch's recent social media activity strongly suggests he's considering a spiritual successor.
On January 1st, Notch posted a poll on X (formerly Twitter) outlining two potential projects: a roguelike/dungeon crawler hybrid and a "spiritual successor to Minecraft." The latter option overwhelmingly won, garnering 81.5% of nearly 300,000 votes.
In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed he was "100% serious" and essentially announced Minecraft 2, albeit in a non-official capacity. He acknowledged the overwhelming fan desire for a new Minecraft-like experience from the original creator, expressing his enthusiasm to revisit his passion project. He clarified that while he's open to either project, the fan response heavily influences his decision.
Notch emphasized his respect for Mojang Studios and Microsoft, assuring fans he wouldn't create a game that infringes on their current work. He understands the legal limitations regarding the Minecraft IP, acquired by Microsoft in 2014. Therefore, any new project would be a distinct creation, inspired by the original but not directly using its assets.
He also voiced concerns about the challenges inherent in creating spiritual successors, acknowledging that they often don't meet expectations. Despite this, he's motivated by the strong fan interest and potential financial success.
While awaiting Notch's potential new game, fans can anticipate the upcoming Minecraft-themed amusement parks in the UK and US (2026 and 2027) and the live-action film "A Minecraft Movie" slated for release later in 2025.
