Bethesda has officially stated that The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered does not include support for official mods. However, this hasn't deterred the passionate community of fans, who have already released a number of unofficial mods.

Just hours after Bethesda and Virtuos unexpectedly released the remastered version for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, a selection of community-created mods appeared on the well-known modding platform, Nexus Mods. These early mods, while mostly focusing on minor customization, underscore the dedication of The Elder Scrolls modding community.

At the time of writing, an impressive total of 22 mods are listed on Nexus Mods. The first mod released offers PC users the ability to customize their desktop by changing the default Oblivion Remastered shortcut icon to one featuring the game's notorious Adoring Fan. Other mods include options to bypass the introductory logos of Bethesda and Virtuos, as well as modifications like tweaking the Wizard’s Fury spell and removing the in-game compass, demonstrating an early push towards gameplay customization.

This surge of modding activity comes despite Bethesda's announcement that Oblivion Remastered would not support official mods, a fact detailed in the FAQ section on their website. Nevertheless, the modding community remains undeterred. Nexus Mods user GodschildGaming, for example, released an Iron Longsword damage mod, stating in the description, “This is just to prove modding is possible. Bethesda says no mod support, I say false. It really is Unreal slapped on top of Oblivion, the data folder is nested in a lot more folders but same concept.”

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered launched today, marking 19 years since the original game's debut, and is available on PC and consoles. As more players dive into the game, the modding community is expected to grow, offering increasingly diverse ways to personalize the gaming experience. While we anticipate more mods to emerge, you can explore discussions on why some consider this release more of a remake than a remaster, and Bethesda's choice of the "Remastered" label.
