"Use Official Nintendo Switch 2 HDMI Cable to Avoid Joy-Con Disconnections"
Some Nintendo Switch 2 owners are encountering an issue where their Joy-Con controllers repeatedly disconnect during gameplay. However, a straightforward fix has emerged: using the official Nintendo Switch 2 HDMI cable.
Multiple users on Reddit have reported random Joy-Con disconnections, with some experiencing dropped connections every few seconds. Our tech editor, Bo Moore, faced the same problem right after unboxing his new Nintendo Switch 2, with the Joy-Cons losing sync almost immediately when the console was docked.
The solution, as confirmed by affected users and Nintendo’s official support, is to use the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable included with the Nintendo Switch 2. Many users assumed their older Nintendo Switch 1 HDMI cables would work, but these older cables do not meet the Ultra High Speed standard required by the Switch 2. Using a non-compliant cable can interfere with wireless signal stability, leading to Joy-Con disconnections.
Switching to the official Switch 2 HDMI cable resolves the issue for most users. Alternatively, any certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable will work just as well.
Nintendo has also updated its support site to clarify:
Ensure you're using an "Ultra High Speed" HDMI cable to connect the dock to your TV. Without it, your console may not perform as expected when docked.
If you're not using the included cable, verify that it's labeled as "Ultra High Speed." The original Nintendo Switch HDMI cable does not meet this standard and should not be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 dock.
While it's always recommended to use manufacturer-provided cables, this serves as an important reminder: replacing the Switch 2 HDMI cable requires attention to specification. For optimal performance and stable controller connectivity, stick with the official cable or a certified Ultra High Speed alternative.
