PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But Not a Home Run

If 2K were to poll gamers on which pro sports franchise they'd like to see resurrected, NFL 2K would undoubtedly top the list. However, 2K is instead delivering its third iteration of PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of gameplay, it shows considerable promise.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for over a decade, starting with The Golf Club. This experience is evident in 2K25's polish. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking a truly expansive course selection (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is undeniably fun. Minor issues, like occasional framerate drops on PC (when using the Y button to survey holes), are easily overlooked.

PlayThe improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty settings allow for both forgiving casual play (Perfect Swing mode) and challenging precision (higher difficulty settings). The ability to shape shots using LB and adjust tee shots laterally adds strategic depth. Improved ball physics also contribute to a more realistic feel. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, certainly enhanced the experience.

MyCareer mode receives a significant upgrade with engaging narrative mechanics. The inclusion of Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing) adds a touch of humor. Choices made in the narrative impact stat boosts, alongside gear upgrades purchased with in-game currency (VC). The addition of weekly refreshed Quests (like achieving 10 consecutive birdies) provides ongoing goals.

PlayThe MyPlayer creator, while not extensively explored, offered sufficient customization. The addition of skill trees is a welcome improvement. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise enjoyable casual and competitive gameplay. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels in its overall competence without any single standout flaw. While this might not generate overwhelming excitement, it positions the game as a solid choice for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxing gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
