Project Zomboid: How to Board Up Windows

Author : Lucas Update : Jan 04,2025

In the zombie-infested world of Project Zomboid, securing your shelter is paramount. While finding a safe haven is relatively straightforward, protecting it from the relentless undead hordes presents a different challenge. This guide details how to construct basic but effective window barricades.

How to Secure Your Windows in Project Zomboid

To board up your windows, you'll need a wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once you've gathered these essential items, right-click on the target window. Your character will automatically begin securing the plank. Each window supports up to four planks for enhanced protection.

Hammers and nails are typically found in expected locations – toolboxes, garages, sheds, and closets. Planks are commonly found on construction sites, or can be salvaged by dismantling wooden furniture (shelves, chairs, etc.) in a pinch. Administrators can utilize the "/additem" command to spawn these items.

Barricaded windows significantly hinder zombie entry compared to unprotected ones. The more planks installed, the more time it takes for the undead to breach the defenses. To remove planks, right-click the boards and select "Remove," requiring a claw hammer or crowbar.

Note that large furniture items (bookshelves, refrigerators) are ineffective as barricades; both players and zombies will pass through them. However, knowing how to move furniture remains a useful skill for interior design purposes.

For more robust defenses, consider metal bars or sheets, though this requires sufficient Metalworking skill.
