Nintendo has addressed concerns regarding the compatibility of its newly released GameCube controller with contemporary Nintendo Switch 2 games. While the controller made headlines during the recent 60-minute Nintendo Direct event, a closer look revealed fine print stating that it would only work with GameCube titles within the Nintendo Switch Online retro library, not other Switch 2 games. In response, Nintendo has reiterated this point, emphasizing that the retro controller was designed primarily for GameCube games. Although users might be able to use the GameCube controller for other Switch 2 games, they should expect potential issues due to the absence of additional buttons and features present in modern controllers.

Nintendo also restated its previous warning that the GameCube controller is exclusively compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system. "The Nintendo GameCube controller is intended for use with the GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and serves as an optional method to play those titles," Nintendo stated in a press release to Nintendo Life.

"Due to the lack of all the buttons and features found in other controllers compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some challenges when attempting to play other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on the Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with the original Nintendo Switch."
