Upcoming Roguelike Has Big Hades Vibes

Rogue Loops: A Hades-Inspired Roguelike Dungeon Crawler

The upcoming indie roguelike, Rogue Loops, is generating buzz with its striking resemblance to Hades, both visually and in its core gameplay loop. However, Rogue Loops introduces a unique twist on the established roguelike formula. While a precise release date remains unannounced, a free Steam demo allows players to experience the game's early stages ahead of its anticipated PC launch in early 2025.

The roguelike genre's recent surge in popularity has seen countless iterations, ranging from action-packed titles like Returnal to classic dungeon crawlers reminiscent of Hades and its currently-in-development sequel. Rogue Loops clearly draws inspiration from the latter, offering a top-down perspective within a repeatedly generated dungeon, complete with randomized loot and ability upgrades.

Beyond its visual similarities to Hades, Rogue Loops distinguishes itself through a compelling mechanic: ability upgrades come with distinct drawbacks. These downsides, which can significantly impact gameplay, sometimes persist throughout an entire playthrough, adding a layer of strategic depth. This mechanic shares similarities with Hades' Chaos Gates, but in Rogue Loops, these "curses" play a more significant, varied, and potentially game-altering role.

Narrative and Gameplay

The game's narrative centers around a family trapped in a deadly time loop. Players navigate five distinct dungeon floors, each populated with unique enemies and bosses. True to roguelike tradition, each run unlocks procedurally generated upgrades, enabling players to craft personalized builds using both beneficial and detrimental buffs and debuffs.

Release and Availability

While a concrete release date is yet to be confirmed, Rogue Loops is slated for release in Q1 2025 on Steam. A free demo, offering access to the first dungeon floor, is currently available on Steam, providing a taste of the game's unique blend of familiar and innovative roguelike mechanics. For those eager for more roguelike action before Rogue Loops' official launch, titles like Dead Cells and Hades 2 offer compelling alternatives.
