WWE 2K25 Hands-On Preview
WWE 2K25: A Refined Wrestling Experience
2K's WWE series, revitalized in 2022, continues its iterative improvements with WWE 2K25. Promising additions like "The Island," a revamped story mode, and a new "Bloodline Rules" match type, weren't available for preview, leaving this assessment focused on core gameplay and the updated Showcase Mode.
Showcase Mode: A Reworked History Lesson
This year's Showcase centers on The Bloodline, spanning generations of Anoa'i family wrestlers. It features three match types: recreating history, creating hypothetical matches, and—most intriguingly—altering historical outcomes. Experiencing these variations (recreating Nia Jax's 2024 win, a Wild Samoans vs. Dudley Boyz match, and an altered Reigns vs. Rollins bout) proved engaging and offered unique perspectives for WWE fans.
Addressing Past Shortcomings:
Previous Showcase modes suffered from excessive use of real-life footage ("Slingshot"), pulling players out of the action. While not entirely eliminated, this issue is significantly improved in 2K25. Key moments are now recreated in-engine, resulting in a smoother, more immersive experience. These sequences are also shorter, minimizing interruptions to gameplay. However, complete control was still lost during the final moments of one match, highlighting a remaining area for improvement.
Refined Gameplay Mechanics:
The checklist system, a previous point of contention, returns but with refinements. Optional timed objectives now offer cosmetic rewards without penalizing failure, a positive change. The return of chain wrestling adds a layer of strategic depth to the beginning of matches, allowing players to gain an advantage through mini-games. The submission mini-game also makes a comeback, though it remains optional.
Weapon Throwing and Intergender Matches:
Weapon throwing returns with an expanded selection and new environments, including the WWE archives, offering a fun and nostalgic experience. The inclusion of intergender matches, a long-awaited feature, opens up numerous previously unavailable matchups, further enhancing replayability. The addition of Underground mode, a rope-less exhibition match in a Fight Club-esque setting, promises further unique gameplay.

Overall Impression:
WWE 2K25 builds upon a solid foundation with smart, incremental improvements. While the core gameplay remains largely unchanged, the refinements and additions to Showcase Mode and other features suggest a worthwhile evolution for the series. The unpreviewed features could significantly elevate the game, but based on the preview, 2K25 appears to be a refined and enjoyable wrestling experience for fans.
