There will be no open world in Borderlands 4. What does Gearbox have in store?

Fans of the beloved looter shooter series are eagerly awaiting the fourth installment of the Borderlands franchise. The initial trailer showcased significant advancements in scale and exploration possibilities, yet it's important to note that Borderlands 4 isn't classified as a fully open-world game.

Gearbox Software co-founder Randy Pitchford has explicitly stated that he would not describe Borderlands 4 as an "open world." He believes the term carries connotations that don't align with the game's design. While Pitchford didn't delve into specifics on how Borderlands 4 deviates from traditional open-world games, he emphasized the distinction between guided gameplay segments and moments of free exploration.

Despite this, Borderlands 4 is poised to be the most expansive title in the series to date. Players can expect seamless transitions between different areas without loading screens, offering uninterrupted exploration. The developers have focused on structuring the game to enhance excitement and prevent aimless wandering, ensuring a more engaging and purposeful adventure throughout the vast universe.

While an exact release date remains under wraps, the game is slated for a 2025 launch. Borderlands 4 will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, promising to deliver the series' signature blend of action, humor, and loot to a new generation of gamers.
