Capcom Drops GFWL in Lost Planet 2, Ends Co-Op
Capcom has discreetly updated Lost Planet 2 to strip out Games for Windows Live (GFWL), effectively killing online functionality and wiping previous save files.
A Shock to the System
The sudden change has blindsided Lost Planet fans on the subreddit, especially since multiplayer was the game's lifeblood. As we noted in our 2010 review: "Beneath its flaws lies a potentially great action game with stunning visuals, but frustrating design choices—poor explanations, awkward pacing, brutal checkpointing—often overshadow the fun. The rare moments of co-op brilliance don’t outweigh its shortcomings, and as a solo experience? Nearly unplayable."
While losing progress is bad enough, that last point about single-player being hopeless is particularly biting now. Without GFWL, Lost Planet 2’s co-op soul is gone.
Community Backlash
"The entire appeal was teaming up," said one frustrated player. "Might as well have delisted it completely." Another asked, baffled: "They removed online from a game built for co-op?"
What GFWL's Loss Means
Games for Windows Live was Microsoft’s defunct platform for achievements, multiplayer, and cross-play. With it deprecated, players either endure tedious login loops or hope for developer patches—though after 15 years, hopes for a Lost Planet 2 revival seem slim.
New players won’t feel the sting: Capcom pulled the game from sale, posting on Steam: "We’re investigating installation issues tied to Games for Windows LIVE. Purchases are paused during this process. Updates to follow."
The same shutdown affects other Capcom titles like Street Fighter x Tekken and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Some fans hope history repeats itself—when GFWL was stripped from Resident Evil, Capcom reportedly replaced it with Steamworks multiplayer.
We’ve reached out to Capcom and will update if we hear back.
For what it’s worth, we found Lost Planet 2 just 'okay' at launch in 2010—flawed but occasionally brilliant. Now, without co-op? It’s a shell of itself.
