Minecraft Movie's Funniest Scene Inspired by The NeverEnding Story

Minor spoilers ahead for A Minecraft Movie.

The creative minds behind A Minecraft Movie shared with IGN that one of the film's most humorous scenes drew inspiration from The NeverEnding Story. In this memorable sequence, Jack Black's character, Steve, finds himself in a precarious situation, having to climb onto Jason Momoa's Garrett because they only had enough Elytra wings for Garrett and Sebastian Hansen's Henry. This scene showcases a blend of physical comedy and suspense as Steve scrambles to avoid a perilous fall. However, the inspiration behind this moment runs deeper than just a comedic effect.

Play"We definitely wanted a Falkor moment from *The Neverending Story* that was both majestic and beautiful, but also one that goes south pretty quickly," explained *A Minecraft Movie* director Jared Hess.

"It was hilarious between takes," added producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson. "Jack was perched on top of Jason in this intricate rig, and he started singing The NeverEnding Story theme while pretending to ride Jason like Falkor."

This scene serves as a nostalgic nod, especially since Jack Black previously portrayed Slip in The NeverEnding Story 3. For Jason Momoa, who played a crucial role in bringing this scene to life, it was an opportunity to blend humor with action.

"I got to help write that scene, and Jack was all in," Momoa shared with a laugh. "Inspired by Top Gun: Maverick, I wanted to execute a stunt where I'd hit the brakes and Jack would slide down. We were brainstorming this at the hotel, and it ended up in the movie—it's phenomenal."

Jack Black hinted at the scene's potential for a more mature rating, saying, "I don't know if it made it into the final cut because we shot different versions, but it could have gone hard rated R. Ultimately, we kept it family-friendly!"

"Let my hips guide you! You can't just ride me like I'm majestic," Momoa exclaimed. "I was dying, man. I was dying."
