Monster Hunter Wilds Doesn't Have New Weapons Because They're Hard to Come Up With
The challenge of crafting new weapon types for the Monster Hunter franchise is significant. This article delves into the complexities of weapon balancing and reveals details about the upcoming MH Wilds x MH Now collaboration event.
Monster Hunter Wilds Developers Weigh In on a Potential 15th Weapon Type
A New Weapon Type Remains a Possibility
With over a decade of consistent weapon options, the Monster Hunter series might benefit from a fresh weapon type. In a February 16, 2025 interview with PCGamesN, Monster Hunter Wilds Director Yuya Tokuda discussed the possibility.
Monster Hunter Wilds offers 14 weapon types, a selection unchanged since Monster Hunter 4 and the introduction of the Insect Glaive. While Tokuda expressed interest in creating a new weapon, he also highlighted the difficulties involved. The team considered it during MH World and Wilds' development, but ultimately prioritized refining the existing arsenal. The significant resources and time required to balance a new weapon against the existing fourteen, ensuring it doesn't feel redundant, have consistently led to the decision to focus on improving the existing weapons.
Capcom's Approach to Weapon Refinement in Monster Hunter Wilds
Capcom continues to innovate, enhancing existing weapons for MH Wilds with features like Focus Mode and Power Clash. While incorporating community feedback from the beta, Tokuda emphasized maintaining the core feel of each weapon type.
Weapon balancing across titles is a meticulous process. Tokuda explained that the team establishes a design concept for each weapon in every game, aiming for a specific feel and play style. However, the true test comes from player feedback, allowing for adjustments based on real-world experience.
Balancing Wilds' weapons proved particularly challenging, especially given Iceborne's additions to existing weapons' move sets and abilities. The team aimed to build upon the existing mastery assumed from Iceborne, introducing advanced combos and abilities.
For MH Wilds, however, the team opted for a complete overhaul, prioritizing a cohesive gameplay experience over simply retaining previously popular elements.
Monster Hunter Now x Monster Hunter Wilds Collaboration Event Phase 2
Monster Hunter Now's collaboration event with MH Wilds enters Phase 2 on February 28, 2025, celebrating the upcoming release. This phase introduces the Chatacabra to MH Now, along with 12 Hope weapons from MH Wilds, and two new layered armors (Hope armor style and a Seikret mount-themed armor).
MH Now players can earn vouchers for MH Wilds items (Mega Potion, Dust of Life, Energy Drink, Well-done Steak, and Dash Juice) via limited-time quests, redeemable on any platform.
Niantic's Senior Producer, Sakae Osumi, hinted at future collaborations, expressing a desire to incorporate more monsters from Wilds.
Monster Hunter Wilds launches February 28, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
