"NIKKE Evang. Collab Fails to Excite"
Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE collaboration with Neon Genesis Evangelion fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. The August 2024 event, featuring Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato, encountered several setbacks.
The initial character designs, a joint effort between Shift Up and Nikke, were deemed too provocative by Evangelion's creators, necessitating revisions. While the adjusted designs satisfied the licensors, they failed to resonate with the player base. The resulting aesthetics, deemed too conservative by fans, lacked the appeal of the original concept.
Player dissatisfaction extended beyond the character designs. Limited-time characters and costumes offered little incentive for in-app purchases, particularly Asuka's gacha skin, which bore a striking resemblance to her standard model.
This collaboration, critics argue, diluted NIKKE's established identity – its distinctive style of anime characters and compelling narrative. The event felt drawn-out and lacked inspiration, leading players to perceive it as underwhelming.
Shift Up acknowledges the feedback and promises improvements in future collaborations. Fans can find both Goddess of Victory: NIKKE and Neon Genesis Evangelion on the Google Play Store. The hope is that future content will recapture the game's initial charm and deliver a more fulfilling experience. For more gaming news, check out our coverage of Wuthering Waves' Version 1.4 update.
