Nintendo Hints at New 3D Mario for Switch 2: 'Stay Tuned'
Nintendo is dropping hints that a new 3D Mario game might be closer than we think, but we'll have to hold our breath a bit longer to see it in action. In a recent interview with CNN, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser responded to fans' longing for another mainline Mario game. While he didn't confirm a direct sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, his comments suggest that fans won't be waiting indefinitely for more news.
"Stay tuned," Bowser teased. "You know, we have a long, long catalog, and a long list of (intellectual property) that I’m sure will make its way to the platform."
While Bowser's words aren't a definitive announcement, they offer a glimmer of hope for those disappointed by the absence of a new 3D Mario title in the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup. When Nintendo revealed its next-gen hybrid console earlier this month, it showcased exciting titles like Donkey Kong Bananza, Mario Kart World, and others. However, a traditional 3D Mario platformer was conspicuously missing.
The most recent flagship Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey, hit shelves in October 2017, just months after the original Switch launched. That means it's been almost eight years since the last major Mario release. While games like Donkey Kong Bananza might temporarily fill the gap, many fans were hoping for a Super Mario Odyssey 2 announcement. Given Mario's pivotal role in Nintendo's vast catalog, as mentioned by Bowser, it would be more surprising if a new 3D Mario game didn't appear soon.
For now, the wait for a new mainline Mario adventure continues. While we keep an eye out for updates, you can explore Nintendo’s updated Switch 2 pre-order schedule here ahead of its launch on June 5, 2025. In the meantime, delve into everything revealed during last week's Mario Kart World Direct and check out our hands-on thoughts on Donkey Kong Bananza.
