Nintendo Switch's Top GBA & DS Games: A Retro Revival

A Retrospective Look at Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS Titles on the Nintendo Switch

This article takes a slightly different approach to reviewing retro games on the Nintendo Switch. Unlike other consoles with a plethora of Game Boy Advance (GBA) and Nintendo DS ports, the Switch's selection is more curated. While the Nintendo Switch Online app boasts a solid GBA library, this list focuses on titles available on the Switch eShop. We've compiled ten favorites – four GBA and six Nintendo DS games – presented without any specific ranking.

Game Boy Advance Gems

Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. Although the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA iteration is still a worthwhile experience. A fun comparison piece, and arguably a more streamlined playthrough. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of the platform, often appealing even to non-shooter fans.

Mega Man Zero – Included in Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

While the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the GBA saw the rise of a true successor: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an excellent side-scrolling action series, though its initial entry shows some minor imperfections in presentation. These rough edges are smoothed out in later installments, but this remains the perfect starting point.

Mega Man Battle Network – Included in Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry, justified by its significant difference from Mega Man Zero. Mega Man Battle Network is a unique RPG boasting a blend of action and strategic elements. The clever concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is fully realized. While later installments show diminishing returns, the original offers considerable fun.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

Another collection with multiple worthwhile titles, Aria of Sorrow stands out as the best. For me, it even surpasses the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on occasion. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes the grinding enjoyable. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, making it a top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS Standouts

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae achieved cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, released on DSiWare, broadened its audience significantly, establishing Shantae as a major character. This game occupies a unique space, evolving from an unreleased GBA title (which is also slated for release soon).

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Included in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA title due to its origins, Ace Attorney is a well-known series blending investigations and courtroom drama. The first game is exceptional, though later entries also hold merit. Its blend of humor and compelling narratives makes it a must-play.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick shares the same writing quality but features unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of your death. This captivating title deserves more recognition than it received on the DS.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS game, ideally played on its original hardware. While ports haven't perfectly replicated the original experience, the Switch version is a viable alternative for those without a DS. A truly exceptional game in every aspect.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

Recently released, the Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow is highlighted here due to the improved button controls over the original touch controls, but all three are excellent.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Included in Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

A franchise that translates somewhat imperfectly outside the DS/3DS environment. Atlus's efforts here are commendable, resulting in a playable experience. Etrian Odyssey III is the largest of the three, offering a substantial RPG experience.
