Persona 5 Royal: Best Ways to Get EXP
Quick Links
In the world of RPGs, leveling up is crucial, and Persona 5 Royal is no exception. Players who neglect to level up their team will find themselves struggling against formidable late-game bosses, often resorting to tedious grinding in Mementos. As an enhanced re-release of Persona 5, Persona 5 Royal introduces numerous quality-of-life improvements and adds over 20 hours of new content.
This updated version of the game includes an additional semester for the Phantom Thieves and tweaks to existing boss battles. With the influx of new content, maintaining high levels for all party members and understanding efficient experience-gathering methods becomes essential.
Updated on January 13, 2025, by Renri Seong: While being over-leveled can make Persona 5 Royal too easy, matching the level of Palace Rulers, especially on a new save file, is crucial. Several strategies can streamline experience farming in P5R, from leveraging Confidant Skills to utilizing Jose's abilities in Mementos. Additionally, Joker can earn EXP for non-active Personas with a specific passive skill. This guide has been revised to include a new section on quickly farming experience with the Insta-kill ability.
Accessories and The Moon Arcana
Mishima Yuuki's Confidant
In Persona 5 Royal, players can enhance their experience gain by downloading the free DLC from the PlayStation Store, which includes the Team Glasses accessory. These glasses boost EXP gain by 15% when equipped on each character.
However, only Joker and three other Phantom Thieves can participate in battles at once, leaving the backline members to receive less EXP. By progressing the Moon Confidant (Yuuki Mishima) to Rank 3 and Rank 5, players can ensure that backup team members also gain EXP. Reaching Rank 10 of Mishima's Confidant allows backup members to receive the same amount of EXP as those in the frontline.
Advancing Mishima's Confidant is straightforward; players should select dialogue options that resonate with him. It's beneficial to bring a Persona of the Moon Arcana when spending time with him. In Persona 5 Royal, Mementos Missions are linked to Mishima's Confidant progression, so neglecting these missions will hinder Confidant rank-ups.
Mementos: Increase EXP Gain
Cognition of Mementos
Persona 5 Royal introduces Jose, a new character who, despite not being central to the plot, significantly aids gameplay. Throughout Mementos, players can collect "flowers" and visit "Stamp Stations." These can be traded with Jose for various rewards or to alter the Cognition of Mementos.
In Jose's Shop, under the Cognition menu, players can choose to increase EXP, Money Rewards, or Item Rewards within Mementos. Boosting EXP from battles to 110% requires 5 Stamps, while achieving the maximum 200% EXP increase costs 12 Stamps. With 165 Stamps available in the game, players need 85 to maximize EXP gains. Stamp Stations are hidden in "dead ends" behind breakable walls on Mementos floors, and players might encounter Jose when moving to a new floor.
Fight the Reaper
What Level is the Reaper?
The Reaper, a formidable recurring enemy in the Persona series, appears in Mementos if players linger too long on a floor. Signs of his approach include a blinking red screen, the sound of chains, and warnings from Morgana or Futaba.
Early in the game, defeating the Reaper is nearly impossible unless playing on a New Game+ file. The Reaper wields powerful -dyne tier spells and Support skills like Concentrate and elemental Breaks. At level 85, his stats are exceptionally high, with his lowest being Agility at 75, still enough to outpace under-leveled Phantom Thieves.
Defeating the Reaper yields a substantial amount of experience and money, often resulting in level-ups for all characters. It's advisable to engage the Reaper at level 60 or higher, equipped with Defense-raising Support skills and Makarakarn to reflect his magic. Alternatively, using the Persona DLC with Izanagi-no-Okami (Picaro) and stacking Concentrate, Heat Riser, and Myriad Truths can deal significant Almighty damage.
Defeat Treasure Demons
How to Summon Treasure Demons
Treasure Demons, unique Shadows introduced in Madarame's Palace, appear sporadically in the Metaverse. These non-hostile Shadows will flee after a few turns, making them challenging to defeat. Each type of Treasure Demon has distinct Affinity Weaknesses and Immunities, but all are susceptible to Almighty attacks.
To defeat a Treasure Demon before it escapes, players can use Shinya's Rank 1 Ability, Down Shot, to down it, enabling an All-Out Attack. Another option is to use a high-crit attack like Morgana's Miracle Punch, provided the Treasure Demon doesn't nullify Physical attacks.
Treasure Demons appear more frequently in Palaces with high security. Players can also craft the Treasure Trap infiltration tool to increase encounter rates. The required materials are:
- 2x Silk Yarn
- 3x Plant Balm
- 1x Cork Bark
Use Persona with EXP Skills
How to Get Growth Passive Skill
In Persona 5 Royal, Personas not equipped by Joker at the end of battle typically do not earn EXP. However, those with the Growth Passive Skill can still gain a percentage of the battle's EXP even when not in use. There are three levels of Growth Skills:
- Growth 1: Persona gains a quarter EXP when inactive.
- Growth 2: Persona gains half EXP when inactive.
- Growth 3: Persona will gain full EXP when inactive.
Personas that naturally learn Growth upon leveling include:
- Growth 1: Saki Mitama (level 7), Koppa Tengu (level 12)
- Growth 2: Lachesis (Innate), Kurama Tengu (level 36), Thoth (level 42), Ananta (level 47)
- Growth 3: Izanagi (level 25), Izanagi Picaro (level 28), Narcissus (level 50), Raphael (level 81)
After unlocking the Electric Chair in the Velvet Room, players can transform Personas into Skill Cards. However, in Persona 5 Royal, only Izanagi Picaro can be turned into a Growth 3 Skill Card. Growth 1 Skill Cards are unobtainable, while Growth 2 Skill Cards can be acquired by taking Caroline and Justine to Miura Beach from September 2nd to September 29th, after clearing event 6 (Sky Tower). This can be done during evenings by speaking to them near the Velvet Room Door outside of Mementos.
Ryuji Sakamoto's Confidant
How to Unlock Insta-Kill
Insta-kill, a skill that instantly defeats Shadows without engaging in combat, can be unlocked by ambushing enemies. If Joker's level is 10 levels higher than the Shadow's, it will be instantly defeated. In Persona 5 Royal, a successful Insta-kill also grants items, yen, experience, and, if space allows, a Persona.
To identify Shadows susceptible to Insta-kill, use Joker's Third Eye ability; those with a green outline are vulnerable. To unlock Insta-kill, players must reach Rank 7 of Ryuji's Confidant. Fortunately, Ryuji's Confidant doesn't require specific Social Stats to advance, making it one of the easiest to max out. To quickly unlock Insta-kill, spend time with Ryuji and choose dialogue options that yield the most points, ideally before focusing on other Confidants.
