Phantom Blade Zero Not A Soulslike, Features Four Difficulty Options

Phantom Blade Zero Playtime Estimated to be 20-30 Hours with Adjustable Difficulty

Phantom Blade Zero breaks away from the soulslike genre by offering four distinct difficulty options: easy, ordinary, difficult, and extremely difficult. This choice sets it apart from typical soulslike games, which are known for their high difficulty and lack of adjustable settings. Game Director Soulframe clarified via an official tweet post-Summer Game Fest 2024 that the game's focus is on "combo-driven, heart-pumping combat that is hectic, rewarding, and exhilarating," rather than replicating the soulslike formula.

While the game does take inspiration from soulslike titles with its multi-layered maps and hidden exploration elements, Soulframe emphasized that "the similarities stop there." He likened the game to "Ninja Gaiden Combat on a Souls Game Map," blending intense hack-and-slash action with expansive area exploration.

Phantom Blade Zero promises a rich gameplay experience, offering players a choice of over 30 primary and 20 secondary weapons, each with unique effects and combat styles. The main story is expected to take around 20-30 hours to complete, with an additional 20-30 hours of side content to explore.

Boss fights in the game are structured in at least two phases, with a convenient checkpoint system allowing players to restart from the second phase if they die. A new game mode, "Li Wulin," lets players challenge previously defeated bosses and unlock new hidden bosses. Additionally, the game includes a mechanic that influences the ending, though details on this feature and the number of possible endings remain under wraps.
