Sony Has Established a New AAA PlayStation Studio
Sony's Unveiled Los Angeles PlayStation Studio: A New AAA IP in the Works
A recent job posting confirms Sony Interactive Entertainment has established a new, unannounced AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks the 20th first-party studio under the PlayStation umbrella and is currently developing a high-profile, original AAA IP exclusively for the PS5.
The news has generated considerable excitement within the gaming community, given PlayStation's impressive track record with its first-party studios. The addition of this new studio further expands Sony's already formidable lineup, joining established giants like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games. Recent acquisitions such as Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite have also significantly contributed to PlayStation's growing development capacity.
Speculation regarding the studio's origins is rife. One theory suggests the studio may house a team spun off from Bungie following the July 2024 layoffs, where 155 employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment. This team was reportedly working on Bungie's "Gummybears" incubation project.
Another compelling possibility centers around Jason Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer and co-founder of Deviation Games. Deviation Games, which was developing a AAA PS5 title, unfortunately closed in March 2024. However, a significant number of former Deviation Games employees joined PlayStation in May 2024, forming a new team under Blundell's leadership. Considering the longer gestation period of Blundell's team, it's plausible that this is the team behind Sony's new Los Angeles studio. The project they are developing remains undisclosed, but speculation suggests it could be a continuation or a reboot of Deviation Games' previous undertaking.
While official announcements regarding the studio and its project remain elusive, the confirmation of a new PlayStation first-party studio working on a AAA title is undoubtedly welcome news for PlayStation fans. The wait for further details may be lengthy, but the anticipation is palpable.
