10 PlayStation® 1 Games Now on Nintendo Switch

Author : Thomas Update : Feb 22,2025

This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles boasting diverse game libraries. However, I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's inaugural console exceeded all expectations, amassing a phenomenal game library, with many titles still seeing re-releases. While these games initially challenged Nintendo's dominance, today they're enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order):

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated title, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Players control a charming, floppy-eared creature navigating the dream world to thwart a perilous threat. The game boasts vibrant graphics, responsive gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel isn't as strong, both games are essential.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A landmark title, Final Fantasy VII introduced the JRPG genre to a wider Western audience, becoming Square Enix's most successful game and a key driver of the PlayStation's success. While a remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. Though later entries became more eccentric, the original remains a compelling, action-packed experience, less philosophical and more reminiscent of G.I. Joe. Its gameplay is highly enjoyable, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series into 3D. While the polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, their charm remains. The vibrant colors, unique enemy capture mechanic, and inventive boss designs create a compelling shooter.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

While Chrono Cross faced the daunting task of following Chrono Trigger, it stands on its own merits. Despite not reaching the same heights, it's a clever and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit underdeveloped, cast of characters and an exceptional soundtrack.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

While I appreciate most Mega Man games, Mega Man X4 stands out for its superior design and cohesive gameplay compared to its predecessors. The Legacy Collection offers a chance to experience this standout entry and judge for yourself.

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with engaging action. Created by the mind behind Ghosts 'n Goblins, it starts easy but presents a significant challenge.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Though originally a SEGA Saturn game, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Sharing a similar spirit to Lunar, Grandia offers a bright, cheerful adventure with a satisfying combat system.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft's PlayStation debut, this collection features the first three games. While quality varied across the series, the original remains a strong entry, focusing more on tomb raiding than action.

moon ($18.99)

A Japanese-exclusive title until recently, moon deconstructs the traditional RPG, leaning more towards adventure gameplay. While not consistently fun, its unique approach and message make it a worthwhile experience.
