AI-Generated Performances Criticized by Nicolas Cage: "Robots Lack Human Emotion"

Author : Elijah Update : Feb 25,2025

Nicolas Cage condemns the use of artificial intelligence in acting, warning that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards "a dead end." He made these comments during his Saturn Awards acceptance speech for Best Actor, for his role in Dream Scenario.

Cage argued that AI cannot authentically portray the human condition, stating, "Robots cannot reflect the human condition for us." He believes that allowing AI to manipulate even a small aspect of a performance will ultimately compromise the integrity and truth of the art, replacing it with mere financial gain.

He emphasized the crucial role of art, including acting, in reflecting the human experience through a thoughtful and emotional creative process – a process he asserts AI is incapable of replicating. He warned that relying on AI will result in art that lacks heart, loses its edge, and becomes bland, replacing genuine human expression with a robotic imitation.

Cage's concerns are echoed by other actors, particularly in the voice acting field, where AI has been used to recreate entire performances, even in major video games. Voice actors like Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) have expressed similar anxieties, highlighting the threat AI poses to their livelihoods.

The filmmaking community is also divided on the issue. While Tim Burton expressed concern, calling AI-generated art "very disturbing," Zack Snyder advocates for embracing the technology rather than resisting it.
