Apple Unveils Affordable iPhone 16e

On Wednesday, Apple unveiled the iPhone 16e, its new budget-friendly smartphone positioned as the most affordable in the current lineup. While replacing the aging 2022 iPhone SE as Apple's entry-level option, the iPhone 16e represents a departure from the deep discounts characteristic of previous SE models. Priced starting at $599, it significantly narrows the price gap with the $799 iPhone 16 released last autumn. Pre-orders begin Friday, February 21, with general availability starting the following week on February 28.

The iPhone 16e marks Apple's debut of its proprietary C1 cellular modem. Though Apple has established chipmaking prowess with its M-series processors for computers and A-series chips for mobile devices, cellular modems present unique engineering challenges.
