The release of the highly anticipated Patch 8 for Baldur's Gate 3 has led to a significant surge in player numbers on Steam, setting developer Larian Studios up for success as they shift focus to their next major project. Patch 8, which was launched last week, introduced 12 new subclasses and a brand new photo mode, attracting both new and returning players eager to explore these additions.

Over the weekend, Baldur's Gate 3 achieved a concurrent player peak of 169,267 on Steam—an impressive milestone for a single-player role-playing game in its second year. While Sony and Microsoft keep PlayStation and Xbox player numbers under wraps, the Steam figures alone highlight the game's continued popularity.

Reflecting on the impact of Patch 8, Larian's CEO Swen Vincke expressed optimism about the game's future. In a tweet, Vincke noted that the patch, combined with thriving mod support, will ensure Baldur's Gate 3 remains popular for the foreseeable future. This success provides Larian with the space to concentrate on their next big endeavor, which Vincke acknowledged is a significant challenge to follow up on.

"Feeling good today about where we are with BG3," Vincke said. "Patch 8 got a lot of people playing again. It took a lot of development effort, but I'm happy we did it. With mod support thriving, I think the game will now continue to do well for quite some time. It gives us room to focus on making our next big thing as good as we can, and that focus is more than welcome. We've got big shoes to fill."

Patch 8 marks the final major update for Baldur's Gate 3, concluding a period of remarkable achievement for Larian. The game, which launched to critical acclaim and achieved tremendous commercial success in 2023, has maintained strong sales through 2024 and into 2025.

Larian surprised the gaming community by announcing their departure from the Baldur's Gate series and Dungeons & Dragons to develop a new, mysterious project. They have since imposed a media blackout to focus on this new venture.

Meanwhile, Hasbro, the owner of Dungeons & Dragons, has hinted at future plans for the Baldur's Gate series. Speaking at the Game Developers Conference, Dan Ayoub, SVP of digital games at Hasbro, revealed that with Larian moving on, there is significant interest in continuing the Baldur's Gate franchise. Ayoub mentioned that Hasbro is developing plans for the future and anticipates sharing more details soon.

While Ayoub did not specify whether these plans involve a new Baldur's Gate game or another type of project, such as a crossover similar to the Magic: The Gathering collaboration, he expressed a desire for a Baldur's Gate 4 eventually. He emphasized that Hasbro is taking a measured approach and is not in a rush to release a new game, indicating that any future Baldur's Gate title would take time to develop.
