Keep Your Guard Up
Xu Wu is an exceptionally nimble boss in Monster Hunter Wilds. Fighting it can be especially frustrating, as its form makes it hard to read its movements. Like Nu Udra, its dark hide obscures its orientation. In addition to managing its multiple limbs, the monster occasionally phases into walls and vanishes briefly—only to reappear overhead, attempting to pounce on you. Fortunately, this move is limited to its nest, so stay extra vigilant when battling there.
Use Ice Attacks
Xu Wu is vulnerable to the Ice element in Monster Hunter Wilds. Consider using Ice-based ammunition, or if you're wielding a melee weapon, equip gear that enhances elemental damage. I also recommend equipping a Frost Jewel to boost your Ice Attack skill. Keeping a Frost Pod on hand is wise too, as it delivers minor Ice damage when thrown.
Avoid the Grab Attack
Beyond using its tentacles and dashing around, Xu Wu also has a grab move in Monster Hunter Wilds. If caught, you’ll be unable to use your primary weapon—but you have roughly two seconds to escape. Your best bet is to use the slinger to break free; Frost Pods work particularly well against this attack.
Attack Xu Wu’s Mouth
Xu Wu’s weakest point is its mouth, though it’s positioned beneath its body. You’ll typically only see it when the monster lunges toward you. Landing a strong hit during this window can deal heavy damage—and may even shatter its mouth, granting you Xu Wu’s fang.
If you can’t reach its mouth, the head is your next best target: it has a 4-star weakness to blunt and cutting damage, and a 3-star weakness to projectile attacks.
Use Poison
Xu Wu has a 3-star weakness to Poison, making it a viable status effect to exploit. Bows are especially effective here, thanks to Poison Coating. You can also try other status ailments, but avoid Sleep—it proves largely ineffective against this foe.

How To Capture Xu Wu in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by The Escapist After reducing the boss’s health to 20 percent, you’ll have an opportunity to set a trap. I recommend using either a Pitfall Trap or a Shock Trap to secure this beast. Adding meat as bait helps, but you can also use yourself as bait to draw it in. Once it’s trapped, fire a tranquilizer at Xu Wu to prevent escape—note that you have only a few seconds before it breaks free.
That’s everything you need to know about hunting and capturing Xu Wu in Monster Hunter Wilds. This creature is extremely agile, so always monitor your stamina bar closely.
Monster Hunter Wilds is available now on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
