Final Fantasy XIV Mobile Receives Chinese Government Approval

Recent reports from video game market research firm Niko Partners suggest a mobile Final Fantasy XIV game is in development by Tencent and Square Enix for the Chinese market. This article delves into the details of this potential collaboration and its implications.

Unconfirmed FFXIV Mobile Game

Niko Partners' recent report lists 15 games approved by China's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA). Among them is a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV, reportedly developed by Tencent. Other notable titles include a mobile and PC version of Rainbow Six, and mobile games based on Marvel Snap, Marvel Rivals, and Dynasty Warriors 8.

While rumors of a Tencent-developed Final Fantasy XIV mobile game circulated last month, neither Square Enix nor Tencent have officially confirmed its existence. Niko Partners' analyst Daniel Ahmad stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the game is anticipated to be a standalone MMORPG, distinct from the PC version. However, he emphasized this information stems from industry sources and lacks official confirmation.

This rumored partnership aligns with Square Enix's May announcement of a multiplatform strategy for key titles like Final Fantasy. Given Tencent's significant presence in the mobile gaming market, this collaboration appears to be a strategic move by Square Enix to broaden its reach.
