MultiVersus Nears Shutdown: Loses 99% of Players

Rumors are swirling that Season 5 of MultiVersus could be the game's last stand. According to AusilMV, a well-known insider for game leaks, a reliable source has indicated that Season 5 is a critical effort to revive the game's fortunes. While it's still just a rumor, the situation is causing concern among the community.

When MultiVersus launched in 2022, it enjoyed explosive success, reaching a peak of 153,000 concurrent players on Steam. However, the game's online player base plummeted by 99% shortly after, prompting Warner Bros. Games to close the project in June 2023, labeling it as an "open beta test." Despite returning with updates in May 2024, the game has struggled to recapture its initial popularity.

The upcoming fifth season, set to begin in early February, is seen as the developers' final opportunity to rekindle player interest. This relaunch of MultiVersus comes after the developers initially referred to the 2022 release as a "beta." Despite the game's warm reception at launch, the decision to temporarily shut it down in June 2023 left many players, particularly those who had purchased the premium edition to support the developers, feeling frustrated and disappointed.
