MultiVersus is Shutting Down After Its 5th Season
MultiVersus to Conclude Operations After Season 5
Warner Bros. Games has announced the impending closure of its platform fighter, MultiVersus, following the completion of its fifth and final season. The game will officially shut down on May 30, 2025.
Season 5: A Final Farewell
The announcement, made via MultiVersus' official social media channels on January 31, 2025, confirmed that Season 5, launching February 4, 2025, will be the game's last. This season will introduce two new playable characters: Aquaman (DC) and Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes), both unlockable through gameplay. After May 30th, the game will be removed from all digital storefronts (PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store). No official reason for the shutdown has been provided.
Offline Play Option
A silver lining for dedicated players: an offline mode will remain accessible. To retain this functionality, players must download the latest version of MultiVersus between February 4th and May 30th, 2025. This will create a local save file preserving all earned and purchased content for offline solo or multiplayer (up to four players) matches against AI opponents.
In-game purchases were halted on January 31, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium (premium currency) can be used until the game's closure.
A Short but Action-Packed Run
Launched in July 2022 as a free-to-play title, MultiVersus quickly gained traction with its Super Smash Bros.-inspired gameplay and team-based 2v2 format. A relaunch in May 2024 introduced new features, including rollback netcode and a PvE mode. However, persistent technical issues, server problems, and player concerns regarding microtransactions ultimately impacted the game's long-term viability. Reports indicated a significant drop in player numbers in July 2024.
At the time of its shutdown, MultiVersus will boast a roster of 35 playable characters. Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games expressed gratitude for the community's support. The game remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
