Ninja Gaiden 4 Was the Surprise Reveal at Xbox Developer Direct 2025
Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Double Dose of Ninja Action Announced at Xbox Developer Direct 2025
Team Ninja declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja," making a surprise announcement at the Xbox Developer Direct 2025. The reveal? Not one, but two Ninja Gaiden titles: Ninja Gaiden 4 and a remake, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. This marks a significant return for the franchise, thirteen years after the release of Ninja Gaiden 3.
Developed by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 is a direct sequel, promising the series' signature blend of brutally challenging yet rewarding gameplay. The collaboration between these two studios is a significant event, leveraging Team Ninja's legacy and PlatinumGames' expertise in fast-paced action. The choice of an Xbox event is fitting, given Microsoft's history with Team Ninja, including exclusive releases of Dead or Alive titles and the original Xbox 360 release of Ninja Gaiden 2.
A New Protagonist Takes Center Stage
Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, aiming to master the ninja arts. Art Director Tomoko Nishii from PlatinumGames described Yakumo's design as a figure capable of standing alongside Ryu Hayabusa, the series' iconic protagonist. While Yakumo is the main focus, Ryu Hayabusa remains a significant part of the story, acting as both a formidable opponent and a crucial benchmark for Yakumo's development. Ryu Hayabusa will also be playable.
Revitalized Combat and New Styles
Ninja Gaiden 4 retains the series' fast-paced, brutal combat, adding a new style for Yakumo: the Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style, alongside the Raven Style. The developers assure fans that while distinct from Ryu's style, the action remains true to the Ninja Gaiden spirit, while incorporating PlatinumGames' signature speed and dynamism. The game is currently 70-80% complete and in the polishing stage.
Release Date and Availability
Ninja Gaiden 4 is slated for release in Fall 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Remake for a New Generation
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a remake of the 2008 Xbox 360 classic, is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and is included with Xbox Game Pass. This remake expands on the original with additional playable characters from Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, including Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel. The remake aims to provide a modern experience that caters to both veteran fans and newcomers.
