First Look: Nintendo Switch 2 Cartridge Revealed

Author : Violet Update : May 22,2025

Nintendo has unveiled the first detailed look at a game cartridge for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, just ahead of its highly anticipated launch next month. The latest video from Nintendo's Nintendo Today app not only showcases the cartridge but also introduces the official Switch 2 carry case. This case is designed to hold up to six game cartridges, accommodating both Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 cartridges seamlessly.

As previously announced, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same dimensions as their predecessors, ensuring that the new console can play games from both generations with a single cartridge slot. However, a notable distinction is the color of the cartridges. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red, a choice that seems to be standard across all titles, not limited to just the Mario Kart World cartridge featured in the video. If you haven't yet downloaded the Nintendo Today app, you can catch a glimpse of the video shared by OatmealDome on X / Twitter.

The top of the cartridge also features a printed design sticker displaying the Switch 2 logo, setting it apart from the original Switch cartridges. The official Switch 2 carrying case, as shown in the video, offers space for the console with attached Joy-Con 2, six game cartridges, and two Joy-Con 2 straps.

Despite the aesthetic changes, the functionality of Switch 2 cartridges remains identical to their predecessors, including the infamous foul-tasting coating that Nintendo adds to prevent accidental ingestion. "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," said Takuhiro Dohta, the director of Switch 2, in a previous interview with GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to hit the shelves on June 5, 2025, just three weeks away. In related news, a report today highlighted that Nintendo's key electronics partner, Samsung, is already considering a hardware refresh for the Switch 2, potentially featuring an upgraded OLED screen.
