Author : Sophia Update : Feb 22,2025

Nintendo is gearing up to combat potential Switch 2 launch shortages and thwart scalpers, stating that "We are making preparations." Following the release of its latest financial report, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed concerns about a repeat of the original Switch's 2017 launch shortages.

He assured Nikkei, as reported by VGC, that Nintendo will implement comprehensive strategies based on past experiences to mitigate issues related to scalping and supply constraints. "We are making preparations," Furukawa confirmed.

These preparations likely involve significantly increasing Switch 2 production. Last year, Nintendo highlighted sufficient manufacturing as a crucial strategy to combat scalpers. The initial Switch launch in March 2017 faced supply limitations, fueling scalping activities. However, Furukawa stated in July 2024 that the Switch 2 launch will be different. He reiterated the importance of meeting consumer demand to prevent inflated resale prices, adding that they are exploring additional measures within legal and regulatory frameworks. He also noted that the semiconductor shortages that hampered Switch production in previous years have been resolved.

A Switch 2 Direct is scheduled for April 2nd, promising further details. Additionally, Nintendo will host hands-on events globally.

In a statement on February 4th, 2025, Furukawa addressed declining Switch sales, dismissing the notion that this was due to consumers awaiting the Switch 2. He characterized the Switch's eighth year as "solid," although acknowledging that sales haven't reached their target.

Nintendo plans to continue supporting the original Switch after the Switch 2 launch, contingent on consumer demand. Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond are slated for 2025 release on the original Switch.
