Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Series from Jon Favreau in the Works for Disney+
Jon Favreau, a veteran of Disney filmmaking, is teaming up with the House of Mouse to bring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to Disney+ in a new series. According to a Deadline report, Favreau will leverage his expertise in both live-action and animation to create this TV show, serving as both writer and producer. Plot details and casting remain undisclosed.
Oswald, a significant figure in Disney's animation history, had a surprisingly brief tenure with the company. Created by Walt Disney, Oswald starred in 26 silent cartoons between 1927 and 1928 before a rights dispute led to his departure and the subsequent creation of Mickey Mouse (as detailed in our comprehensive look at Disney's 100-year history). Disney reacquired the rights to Oswald in 2006 and released a new short featuring the character in 2022—its first in 95 years. This new series suggests a more substantial commitment to Oswald's legacy. While a release date is unannounced, the project is clearly underway.
Favreau's involvement with this classic Disney property comes alongside his work on newer franchises. He's a key figure in the Star Wars universe, contributing to The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, and Ahsoka. His fifteen-year relationship with the Marvel Cinematic Universe includes both on-screen and behind-the-scenes roles, culminating in directing the 2019 Lion King remake. He's also set to direct The Mandalorian and Grogu's theatrical release in 2026.
Interestingly, Oswald's recent appearance in Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, a horror film starring Ernie Hudson, premiered in 2023—just a year after the character entered the public domain. This new Disney+ series, however, marks a significant official return for the classic character under the Disney banner.
