Palworld PS5 Release Excludes Japan, Nintendo Lawsuit Likely the Reason

Announced at PlayStation's September 2024 State of Play, Palworld finally arrives on PlayStation consoles, following its Xbox and PC launches. However, the PS5 release in Japan is on hold due to recent legal issues with Nintendo.

Palworld's PlayStation 5 Japan Release Indefinitely Delayed

Palworld's PlayStation Debut at State of Play

Palworld launched on PS5 globally as announced during PlayStation's September 2024 State of Play. Sony even showcased a trailer featuring a Palworld character decked out in gear inspired by Aloy from Horizon Forbidden West.

Despite the global launch, Japanese PlayStation players are currently unable to access the game. This delay stems from a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Nintendo and Pokémon against developer Pocketpair.

Palworld's PS5 Japan Release Date Remains Uncertain

Following Sony's announcement, Palworld's Japanese Twitter (X) account provided an update: "As announced at the PlayStation State of Play, the PS5 version of 'Palworld' launched today in 68 countries and regions worldwide." The team apologized to Japanese players for the delay, stating that a release date for Japan is yet to be determined. They pledged to bring the game to all PS5 users as soon as possible.

While Pocketpair hasn't explicitly stated the reason for the delay, it's widely believed to be a direct consequence of the ongoing legal battle in Japan. Last week, Nintendo filed a lawsuit in Tokyo District Court seeking an injunction and damages. A granted injunction could force Pocketpair to cease Palworld operations, potentially leading to the game's removal.
