The $700 PS5 Pro's launch has prompted analysts to predict sales comparable to the PS4 Pro, even with a significant price increase. Ampere Analysis' Piers Harding-Rolls noted the substantial price difference between the standard PS5 and the Pro model (40-50%), much larger than the gap between the PS4 and PS4 Pro at launch.
Ampere Analysis forecasts approximately 1.3 million PS5 Pro units sold during its November 2024 launch window – around 400,000 fewer than the PS4 Pro's initial sales in 2016. Harding-Rolls highlighted the price disparity, stating that while it might dampen demand, PlayStation enthusiasts are less likely to be deterred by cost. The PS4 Pro ultimately sold approximately 14.5 million units, representing about 12% of total PS4 sales, with projected sales reaching around 13 million units over five years. Furthermore, PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny confirmed that the PS5 Pro will enhance PSVR2 gaming through performance improvements. In a statement to Cnet, Cerny indicated that the Pro's superior GPU will allow for higher-resolution PSVR2 game outputs, though specific titles haven't been confirmed yet. He also mentioned that the PS5 Pro's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (AI-assisted upscaling) will eventually be compatible with PSVR2. The PS5 Pro also boasts compatibility with other PS5 accessories, including the PS Portal remote player.
This PS Portal compatibility, coupled with earlier rumors of a PlayStation handheld capable of running PS5 games, has fueled speculation about a new portable console. While unconfirmed, the PS5 Pro's advanced capabilities could certainly pave the way for such a device.
