Respawn Has Quietly Canceled a Multiplayer FPS Incubation Project
Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has recently canceled an unannounced incubation project, leading to the layoff of an unspecified number of team members involved. The news was initially brought to light by Insider Gaming, referencing a LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator who mentioned being part of the project for the past year before its cancellation. This individual is now seeking new employment along with other talented professionals affected by the decision.
IGN independently verified the cancellation of this unannounced multiplayer FPS project. It was developed by a team previously working on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, sources described the number as "small." Additionally, at least one individual connected to the project has stated on LinkedIn that their exit was voluntary.
This development is part of a broader pattern of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring within Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023. That year, EA eliminated 50 jobs at BioWare and an unknown number at Codemasters. The trend continued with the layoff of 670 employees across the company and the termination of several projects, including the Star Wars FPS, resulting in around two dozen job losses at Respawn. Subsequent restructuring at BioWare involved moving developers to other internal projects and additional layoffs of key personnel.
IGN has reached out to Electronic Arts for further comment on the situation.
