"Saros: Housemarque's 2026 Follow-Up to Returnal"
Housemarque has unveiled Saros, the eagerly awaited sequel to the 2022 roguelite shooter, Returnal. Set to launch in 2026 exclusively for PlayStation 5, with enhancements for the PS5 Pro, Saros features Rahul Kohli in a starring role.
The game was showcased during the latest PlayStation State of Play event, and it unmistakably carries the signature style of a Housemarque title. Players will step into the shoes of Arjun Devraj, a Solatri enforcer on a quest for truth on a treacherous, ever-changing planet. This world is shrouded in mystery, influenced by an eclipse and home to at least one formidable entity. The tagline "come back stronger" hints at the roguelike mechanics fans adored in Returnal, while the display of fireballs suggests Housemarque's penchant for bullet-hell gameplay.
Creative director Gregory Louden describes Saros as the "ultimate evolution" of Housemarque's focus on gameplay-centric experiences. Although Saros is a new single-player IP, it builds upon the foundation laid by Returnal's third-person action. However, Saros isn't just a repeat of Returnal. As detailed on the PlayStation Blog, Louden emphasized a significant gameplay difference: in Saros, the world evolves after the player's death, but players can also permanently enhance their weapons and suits, adding a new layer of progression.
More details are slated to be revealed later this year, with Housemarque planning to showcase an extended look at the gameplay.
