Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film: Coming Sooner Than Expected, Says Writer

Remember Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? Don't worry, the director of Deadpool & Wolverine is still at the helm, and we've got a reassuring update straight from the project's writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant about the eagerly anticipated film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

At this stage, the movie remains shrouded in mystery, with one of the few known details being its setting post-The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has shed light on its timeline, stating in a February interview with Deadline, "That's also in the future. It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the era following The Rise of Skywalker.

Kennedy also confirmed in the same discussion that the movie will follow 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she elaborated. Another significant detail is the reported involvement of Ryan Gosling, who is set to star in the film.

Tropper's comments are a promising sign that Levy's project is progressing. However, fans will need to exercise patience as the film won't be released until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.

Disney hasn't released a Star Wars film since the 2019 release of the critically panned Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker. In the interim, several projects have been canceled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars feature films: a Dave Filoni-directed New Republic film set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-The Rise of Skywalker.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a key focus for Disney, with a recent THR report indicating her appearance in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.

And that's not all Disney has planned for the Star Wars universe. Late last year, it was revealed that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, won't be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga.

The next Star Wars project to hit your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple premiere episode.
