Sony Unveils teamLFG: A New PlayStation Studio Creating Team-Based Action Game

Author : Savannah Update : May 08,2025

Sony has unveiled a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, and has given a sneak peek into its inaugural project. In a recent post on the PlayStation Blog, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, revealed that teamLFG was born out of the renowned Destiny and Marathon developer, Bungie. The studio is currently working on what Hulst describes as an "ambitious" incubation project, sparking excitement within the gaming community.

The acronym LFG in teamLFG stands for 'Looking For Group,' a term popular in online gaming circles, indicating that social interaction will play a significant role in the studio's creations. Their debut game is described as a team-based action game, drawing inspiration from a diverse range of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and intriguingly, "frog-type games." Players will dive into a "lighthearted, comedic world" set in a newly crafted, mythic, science-fantasy universe.

teamLFG's mission is clear: "to create games where players can find friendship, community, and belonging." They aim to foster an environment where players feel excited to log in and find their teammates already online, to recognize familiar names, and to create memorable moments and stories from their gameplay experiences. As the team puts it, "dat’s da good stuff."

The studio is focused on developing immersive multiplayer worlds that are action-packed and designed for players to learn, play, and master over countless hours. They plan to involve their community deeply in the development process through early access playtests, emphasizing the importance of staying agile to respond to player feedback not only before launch but throughout the game's live service phase.

teamLFG's game is a direct result of an incubation project that emerged from Bungie during a period of significant layoffs last year. Following its acquisition by Sony, Bungie faced challenges in meeting financial targets with Destiny 2, which led to layoffs affecting approximately 100 employees in November 2023, and another 220 in 2024, with 155 of them being reassigned within Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was during these turbulent times that the incubation project was announced.

Amidst these challenges, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in pushing for improvements to the live service looter shooter Destiny 2. Since then, Bungie has fully unveiled the extraction shooter Marathon and outlined the future roadmap for Destiny 2. Notably, there are no plans for a Destiny 3, and a spinoff project called Payback has been canceled.
