Spider-Man 2 Grapples with PC Performance, Steam Reviews Mixed

Spider-Man 2's PC port, initially touted for its impressive performance based on its system requirements, has received a mixed reception on Steam. A significant number of players are reporting various technical issues, resulting in a currently 55% positive user review rating.

Many users, even those with high-end hardware like RTX 4090 GPUs and the latest Nvidia drivers, are experiencing frequent crashes. One user reported the game crashing to the desktop every five minutes, prompting a refund request. Another described the game as "rough," citing issues such as loading failures in cutscenes, extremely low frame rates in these scenes, audio desynchronization, freezing, stuttering, and other performance problems.

The primary problem seems to be frequent crashes related to the game's graphics driver. A common error message indicates potential causes like outdated drivers, excessive in-game settings, GPU overheating, or game-related errors.

PlayFurther complaints include malfunctions with features such as DLSS and ray tracing, alongside extended loading times, missing textures, and persistent audio glitches. Some players have also noted performance stutters escalating into crashes after prolonged gameplay sessions, potentially suggesting a memory leak.

Nixxes, the developer responsible for the port, acknowledged the reported crashes on the Steam forums. They directed users to their support website for troubleshooting guides and requested logs and crash dumps to facilitate faster issue resolution. The developer also addressed a bug impacting photo-op missions, suggesting a workaround involving reduced graphics settings or resolution for users experiencing extremely low frame rates (below 20 FPS) during these sequences.
