Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function
A recently published patent reveals exciting new features for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons, including rumored mouse functionality. This article delves into the details of the patent and the upcoming Nintendo Direct.
Switch 2 Joy-Cons: Mouse Support and More
A February 6, 2025, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) publication details a Nintendo patent showcasing innovative Joy-Con features for the Switch 2, notably mouse-like capabilities. This aligns with speculation sparked by the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which depicted the controller being moved across a surface, hinting at its potential use as a pointing device.
The patent describes the mouse function as follows: "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."
Beyond mouse functionality, the patent also unveils a new charging dock accommodating two Joy-Cons simultaneously, and a magnetic attachment connecting the Joy-Cons to the console with a wrist strap. Furthermore, the patent introduces a new controller design – essentially two half-controllers, each with an optical sensor, capable of independent mouse functionality and combinable into a single controller via a connecting attachment.
It's crucial to remember that these patent details may not fully reflect the final Switch 2 product, as Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these features.
