Ubisoft has announced the closure of its free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, with servers scheduled to shut down on June 3, 2025. This decision follows a period of declining player numbers despite an initially promising launch.

The Shutdown Process

The "sunset" process begins December 3, 2024, halting new player registrations, downloads, and in-game purchases. Ubisoft will issue refunds for eligible purchases. Full refunds will be provided for the Ultimate Founders Pack and in-game purchases made since November 3, 2024, with processing expected to take up to eight weeks (completion by January 28, 2025). Contact Ubisoft for assistance if a refund isn't received by this date. Note that the standard Founder's Pack and Founder's Pack Elite are not eligible for refunds.

Reasons Behind the Closure

Marie-Sophie Waubert, Ubisoft's Chief Studios and Portfolio Officer, cited the game's inability to maintain a sustainable player base within the highly competitive free-to-play FPS market. Despite initial success and dedicated player support, XDefiant failed to attract and retain enough players to justify continued investment.

Impact on the Development Team

The closure will result in significant restructuring. Approximately half of the XDefiant team will transition to other roles within Ubisoft. However, the San Francisco and Osaka studios will close, and the Sydney studio will downsize, leading to job losses for 143 employees in San Francisco and approximately 134 in Osaka and Sydney. This follows previous layoffs in August 2024 at other Ubisoft studios.

A Positive Reflection

Despite the disappointing outcome, XDefiant's Executive Producer, Mark Rubin, highlighted the positive aspects, including the strong community engagement and respectful player-developer interactions. The game initially exceeded expectations, achieving 5 million users shortly after its May 21, 2024 launch, and reaching 15 million players overall. However, this success proved unsustainable in the long term. Rubin emphasized the challenges inherent in the free-to-play market, where sustained profitability often requires significant time and investment.

Season 3 Release and Prior Reports

Season 3 will still launch as planned, although details remain scarce. Speculation points towards content from the Assassin's Creed franchise. While an earlier report from Insider Gaming suggested the game's impending closure due to low player numbers, this was initially denied by Rubin. The release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 between Seasons 2 and 3 may have further impacted XDefiant's player base.

In conclusion, XDefiant's shutdown serves as a reminder of the challenges and risks associated with the free-to-play market, even for established developers like Ubisoft. While the closure is undoubtedly disappointing, the positive community experience and the commitment to supporting affected employees offer a degree of solace.
