To initiate The Tournament quest, you'll need to speak with Gyoji, a resident of Yamato. After you've taken down several members of The Shinbakufu, Gyoji will be waiting outside your hideout, eager to discuss the tournament. Head to the secret fighting arena located at Ominesanji Temple in Southeastern Yamato. Nearby, you'll find the Ominesanji Overlook viewpoint to the west of the area. Synchronize at this point to establish a fast travel option, making it easier to return and switch characters as needed.
Once you arrive at Ominesanji Temple, engage with Gyoji once more. He'll brief you about the upcoming challenge: you'll need to win four one-on-one duels before facing the ultimate champion. Following the cutscene, ring the bell to kick off your first fight.
How to Complete The Tournament in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
The Tournament is a series of intense, high-stakes battles. Fortunately, you can take breaks between fights, allowing you to ring the bell when you're ready for the next challenge. Use these intervals to heal with rations and upgrade your weapons and armor as necessary.
To triumph over each opponent, we suggest equipping Yasuke with a long katana and mastering the art of dodging and parrying. These techniques will help you exploit the fighters' vulnerabilities. Additionally, utilize abilities like Power Dash and Payback when you have sufficient adrenaline.
Knowing your opponents' weapons can give you a strategic edge. Here's a rundown of the fighters you'll face:
- Lady Masago wields a Naginata.
- Lord Suguru uses a Katana.
- Lord Hokuto fights with a Kanabo.
- Lady O-Sen employs dual Poison Katanas and throws ranged items.
- Lord Unkai also uses a Naginata and can heal by drinking if you keep your distance for too long.
Upon completing the first tournament, speak with Gyoji again on the hill. He'll express gratitude for your efforts and mention future tournaments. It's during this conversation that you'll unlock the "Test Your Might" trophy.

For The Tournament, the Long Katana is your weapon of choice. Equip the highest rarity Long Katana available and upgrade it to the maximum level at your hideout’s blacksmith. Adding an engraving that boosts Armor Damage or Armor Piercing can be a game-changer. Your armor selection is crucial, not only for increased health but also for combat-enhancing engravings.
Before entering The Tournament, ensure you've unlocked the Samurai Daimyo Armor of Legend by defeating The Ox from the Shinbakufu. Also, acquire the Protector’s Armor by completing a Castle quest. The former provides a 75% damage increase at the cost of reducing your health to 25%, while the latter enables you to parry unblockable attacks. Combining these engravings into one armor set allows you to defeat tournament enemies swiftly, provided you parry effectively.
Invest your Mastery points heavily in the Long Katana and Samurai skill trees. Max out Combat Expert to enhance your melee damage, and unlock Power Dash and Payback for strategic advantages.
*Assassin’s Creed Shadows* is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, launching on March 20th.
