11 bit studios has unveiled *Frostpunk 1886*, a full-scale remake of its critically acclaimed 2018 title, set to launch in 2027. The Polish development team is rebuilding the original game from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5, marking a significant visual and technical evolution. This announcement arrives just over six months after the release of *Frostpunk 2*, which itself launched to generally positive reviews.

The original *Frostpunk* introduced players to a gripping, emotionally charged world—a city-building survival game set in an alternate-history late 19th century ravaged by a global volcanic winter. Players were tasked with constructing and managing a city amid extreme cold, balancing scarce resources, making tough moral decisions, and exploring the frozen wastelands for survivors and supplies. IGN’s review praised the game’s bold thematic blend, awarding it a 9/10 and calling it “an engaging and unique, if occasionally unintuitive, strategy game.”

*Frostpunk 2* expanded on that foundation, though it received a slightly lower score of 8/10 from IGN. Reviewers noted that while the sequel offered a broader scope and deeper societal mechanics, it lost some of the intimate storytelling charm of the original. Still, 11 bit studios remains committed to supporting *Frostpunk 2* with upcoming DLCs, console releases, and major content updates—all while developing *Frostpunk 1886* in parallel.

With the original Liquid Engine—used in both *Frostpunk* and *This War of Mine*—no longer under active development, the studio saw a clear opportunity to reimagine the first game using a more modern, scalable framework. According to 11 bit, *Frostpunk 1886* isn’t simply a graphical upgrade; the title reflects a key turning point in the game's lore—the year the Great Storm hit New London.

Instead, this remake introduces new gameplay mechanics, laws, expanded narrative choices, and most notably, a completely new Purpose path, ensuring even veteran players will find fresh experiences. The move to Unreal Engine also unlocks long-requested features like mod support and future DLC integration, transforming *Frostpunk 1886* into a flexible, evolving platform for years to come.

11 bit studios emphasized that fans can expect both *Frostpunk 2* and *Frostpunk 1886* to coexist and grow side by side—two distinct but complementary visions of survival in a world locked in endless frost.

In addition to the *Frostpunk* projects, 11 bit is also preparing the release of *The Alters*, a sci-fi narrative-driven game slated for June 2025.
