GameCube Fans Excited by New Nintendo Filings for Switch 2

Excitement is brewing among Nintendo fans as new filings hint at the possibility of a new GameCube controller designed for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. This development suggests that players might soon enjoy GameCube classics through the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service, enhancing the retro gaming experience on the new console.

As reported by Nintendo Life, a recent FCC filing by Nintendo for a "game controller" is believed to be compatible with the Switch 2, and the controller is rumored to use wireless Bluetooth technology. Further investigation by the internet community, specifically Famiboards, has led to speculation that one of the images in the filing shows a label location similar to that found on the back of a GameCube controller, right behind the C-Stick.

While some believe this could be a new version of the Switch Pro Controller, the prevailing theory is that it's designed for use with the Nintendo Switch Online service, which already offers wireless classic controllers for its retro gaming library.

This news has sparked discussions about the potential addition of a GameCube library to Nintendo Switch Online. Fans have been eager for GameCube classics to be included on the Switch, and with the arrival of the Switch 2, their wishes might finally be fulfilled. So far, Nintendo has included games from the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy in its subscription service. Could the GameCube be next?

Nintendo Consoles

The Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled in January with a teaser trailer that confirmed features like backwards compatibility and an additional USB-C port. However, many details remain under wraps, including information about its game lineup and the function of a new button on the Joy-Con. The theory that this button could serve as a mouse has gained some traction.

Additionally, a recent Nintendo patent hinted that the Joy-Con controllers for the Switch 2 might be able to attach upside down. The new console is expected to utilize gyro mechanics similar to those in smartphones, and unlike the original Switch, the Joy-Cons will use magnets for attachment rather than rails. This design change could allow players to customize the placement of buttons and ports. If implemented, this flipping feature could introduce new gameplay dynamics.

While much about the Switch 2 remains a mystery, Nintendo has scheduled a Direct for April 2 to shed more light on the console.

In the meantime, fans can enjoy a taste of GameCube nostalgia with Metroid Prime Remastered, available on the current Nintendo Switch.
