Harry Potter: Magic Awakened EOS Announced, Guess The Spells Didn’t Work After All!
NetEase's collectible card RPG, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in select regions. The end-of-service (EOS) announcement affects the Americas, Europe, and Oceania, with servers ceasing operation on October 29th, 2024. Players in Asia and certain MENA regions can continue playing.
Initially unveiled in 2020 and developed by Zen Studio, the game launched in China in September 2021 and globally on June 27th, 2022, following a period of pre-registration and delays. Despite a promising start in China, global momentum faltered.
Why the Shutdown?
While the game's Clash Royale-inspired wizarding duels and Hogwarts atmosphere initially resonated with players, its popularity waned. Reddit discussions highlight player frustration with a shift towards pay-to-win mechanics. Reworking the reward system, which previously benefited skilled free-to-play players, slowed progression and discouraged many.
The game has already been removed from the Google Play Store in affected regions (as of August 26th). Those in unaffected regions can still experience the dorm life, classes, secrets, and student duels.
